Radiation Measurement Service

Introdution

Mobile communication industry has attained an incredible worldwide success. In Macau, it is one of the important economic components, accounting for over 200 percentage users’ increase in the past five years and over 635,000 users registered in 2006. Moreover, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) has been widely deployed in both commercial and residential areas recently. This high penetration of wireless communication leads to a concern of human exposure on electromagnetic radiation.

Guidelines

There are several international standards defining the issues related to human exposure to electromagnetic radiation, and two of the most popular ones are ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection), which is adopted by most European countries, and IEEE C95.1, which is adopted by United States and Canada. Both of them have identified safety thresholds and measurement procedures for human exposure to electromagnetic radiation. They have been adopted worldwide under recommendation by several international and national institutions, even though some countries decided to define their own thresholds on a national level (e.g. Japan and Italy).

Equipments & Procedures

For testing the safety compliance of human exposure on electromagnetic radiation, our professional engineer team uses two measurement equipments: Seibersdorf’s Field Nose Basic Kit and Anritsu's Portable Spectrum Analyzer S332D.

Seibersdorf’s Field Nose Basic is a system for the accurate measurement of electromagnetic radiation caused by transmitters in the frequency range from 80 MHz to 3 GHz. It consists of a calibrated receive antenna, an automatic antenna rotator, a measurement software NOSE and required cables. The system is required to be operated with a spectrum analyzer and a controlled computer.
